Similarities between the iPad 2 and iPad 3 include the display, wi-fi, accelerometer, compass, gyroscope and storage. The display for both of these iPads is a 9.7-inch IPS LED-backlit screen, the Wi-Fi is 802.11 a/b/g/n and they both offer options for 16, 32, or 64 GB of storage. From that point, improvements have been made. Here is a list of what is different:

  • Resolution: the iPad 2 has 1024×768 and the iPad 3 has 2048×1536
  • CPU: the iPad 2 has a Dual-Core Apple A5 and the iPad 3 has a Dual-Core Apple A5X
  • Graphics: the iPad 2 has PowerVR SGX543MP2 and the iPad 3 has PowerVR SGX543MP4
  • Memory: the iPad 2 has 512 MB and the iPad 3 has 1 GB
  • Camera: the iPad 2 has a front facing VGA and rear facing 720p and the iPad 3 has a front facing 720p and rear facing iSight 5 MP
  • Data Rate: the iPad 2 has 3G and the iPad 3 has 4G LTE
  • Bluetooth: the iPad 2 has 2.1 + EDR and the iPad 3 has 4
  • Siri: The iPad 2 does not offer Siri, the iPad 3 does
  • GPS: The iPad 2 offers GPS for the 3G version only and the iPad 3 offers it with the 4G version only
