So far I have been really impressed with what Mika Mobile are bringing to the iOS store in particular I had a great time with OMG Pirates and the predecessor to this game Zombieville USA. These guys just seem to get what makes a good and fun hand held game. Zombieville USA is selling in huge numbers as well.
This game looks amazing. It certainly has that Mika Mobile art style that many of their games seem to follow. It has a cell shaded type look to it. For me the best game that you can compare this to is something like Castle Crashers. It just looks amazing and while it is done in a cartoon style I love the over the top violence that is hear. Never has blowing a zombies head of looked as fun as it does in Zombieville USA 2.
Now there is pretty much no story to this game you are just thrown in at the deep end of a zombie apocalypse and you need to survive. So if you are expecting a Walking Dead style story experience then you will be very disappointed. But this is one of those games that really does not need a story as the game play is just so much fun.
What I love about this game is that to me this is like a love letter to people who grew up in the arcades when the side scrolling beat em up was king. I am talking about games like Double Dragon, Final Fight and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. You are on the streets and you are required to just kill hordes and hordes of zombies. It sometimes can feel like these zombie hordes are never ending, but that is part of the fun.
The idea of the game is that you go around different cities you know how tough a city will be by its infection level. The higher that its infection level is then the tougher that level will be, there is a pretty good variety of zombies for you to shoot and they are varied enough that you will have to think about what you are doing. Some of them are easy to mow down, but others are faster and take more shots. You will have to play some of the earlier levels a few times as you need to have killed a certain number of zombies in order to unlock some of the more infected parts of the map.
This is not really an issue that makes the game boring as killing zombies is just so much fun. And there are various upgrades that you can get. You can change the look of your character if you want, but to me this is a bit of a waste. As you can use your money you collect to upgrade your character so that they can dish out more damage so the game does have some RPG elements in there as well. Or if you rather you can buy some new more powerful weapons. The way that you play the game is just great. I have played many action games lately that want you to use swipe controls. Here though we have a good old fashioned virtual joystick and a couple of attack buttons. This is the perfect control scheme for a game like this.
One thing that is really fun is the co-op mode. I love games like Streets Of Rage & Final Fight and they are just so much for fun when you are playing with a buddy. Well Zombieville USA 2 is no exception and playing this with another person is a ton of fun. I would go as far to say it’s one of the best multiplayer experiences I have had on my iPad in a very long time.
Zombieville USA 2 is a fantastic game and well worth the price of admission. It is under a buck which is just crazy. I would honestly class this game as value for money if it was even five bucks that is how good it is.
