iClean is an app created by Monkey Taps. It costs $.99 and is available on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Functionality:

When you delete a photo or text off your device, it’s not physically deleted. The operating system will now handle this data on the hard drive as being okay to overwrite with new information.

So if you delete 1,000 images and install a new app, then the new app will overwrite 200 images for its necessary space. The other 800 images will still be on the hard drive even though they are deleted.

If you’re concerned about your privacy and security, especially if you want to sell your phone and you don’t want anyone to recover your data, then this is the app that gives you the peace of mind you need.

iClean basically starts writing huge amounts of data to your phone so that deleted data is overwritten and unrecoverable. Another benefit of this app is saving space. Although the space saving is not guaranteed because it’s not the main focus of the program.

The Good:

Save storage and save your butt from having sensitivity data recovered. How great?

The Bad:

No forensic scientist has claimed that this app actually does what it does. From what I understand the iPhone uses an SSD to store data. This means that the hard drive would have to be overwritten over 20 times for deleted information to truly be deleted.

Conclusion:

If you’re selling your phone then running this app for a buck, once or twice won’t hurt. If you’re a secret alien that doesn’t want to be discovered, don’t waste your money on it until it’s verified by forensic scientists.
