Toontastic Jr. Pirates is a create-your-own story app for the iPod, at the time of writing, this app is $0.99.
This application allows children four and up to create their own pirate stories. You can set the amount of control and direction the user gets by specifying the age range in the settings. The user is then directed to pick a beginning, middle and ending. The app does an animation for then lets the user control the digital puppets on the screen, the audio is captured as well. Once this is done you pick your music. This is repeated two more times. A video is created from the user’s interactions and selection of music.
The only downside is you can’t export your videos. Launchpad Toys wants you to upgrade to their Toontastic story sharing network. If you’re wondering if you can draw your own characters – you can’t. As Launchpad Toys FAQ states:
WARNING: Broken Record Alert! Toontastic Jr. does not support uploading/exporting, but if you’d like to share cartoons with friends and family then we’d recommend (again) checking out Toontastic. Toontastic features a global storytelling network called ToonTube so that kids can upload their cartoons and share with friends and family around the world. In the meantime, for all the youngsters out there, we think you’ll really enjoy StoryShare.
It seems Toontastic JR’s short comings is incentive to sign up for Toontastic, which is $9.99. There is also a free version of Toontastic, which allows you to create your own characters and sets. Although this app has a couple of short comings it’s not enough to make me feel ripped off for paying $0.99. I’m able to justify the price was for a pirate themed story generator. If I were the developer I would have released this version of the app for free since they are trying to up sell to the user, then offer the upgrade as an in-app purchase. This app is very enjoyable and can provide hours of fun for anybody who wants to dabble in creating stories.
