Lets get ready to rumbleeeeeeeee. Today were doing something a little different. We all know that one a game hits big that there can be many “imitations” that will pop up on the iOS store to try and cash in. Well these two games today are so incredibly similar it really does blow my mind. So rather than review them separately. I am going to take a look at the two of them together and pick a winner.

Now let me just say that What’s The Word did come out first and was a huge hit. Something very interesting also happened in that when it was first released 4 Pics 1 Word was actually called What’s The Word: 4 Pics 1 Word. I guess that they though that was going a little to far and now the game is on the app store as just 4 Pics 1 Word.

Anyway in terms of the presentation of these two games. The idea is basically the same. You have four pictures and a series of letters. Both games follow this exact formula and they both use pretty standard stock photos. I guess I would say that the 4 Pics 1 Word game sues a somewhat more professional and serious style it has darker background colours and the letters are on a silver background. What’s The Word is more colourful with a brighter background and the letters on a yellow background. Honestly there is pretty much zero difference here and it basically boils down to me if I want my letters on a silver or yellow background.

But these are games that are not all about graphics. The idea here that was made very popular with What’s The Word is that you have four pictures on the screen and a series of letters like I mentioned before. These four pictures will all have a word in common. For example there could be a set of pictures like this. A mouse eating cheese, A cartoon mouse, a computer mouse and a different computer mouse. What is the common thing here? Well its mouse of course and by using your letters to write mouse you will be rewarded with coins. This mouse example is a very simple puzzle, but some of them are really tough and will have you pulling your hair out trying to figure it out.
Now 4 Pics 1 Word is exactly the same game. And I mean exactly the same game. I am sure you are thinking that there must be some game play mechanic that is different. But there is not. I am not saying this is a bad thing. Because 4 Pics 1 Word is still a very good game. But if you have already spent a ton of time playing What’s The Word then you will certainly not find anything new here.

Each game will reward you with coins for giving the right answer these coins are very valuable. As they can do things like take away few of the extra letters. Trust me when I tell you to resist the temptation of using these for as long as possible. As both game have some really tricky words that will take you a while to figure out. So being able to get rid of a couple of letters is a god send.

So which game is the one I should download? Well being honest I have been playing What’s The Word for a while before I downloaded 4 Pics 1 Word. So I may be a little biased towards that, but the truth is you really cannot go wrong with either one of these games. Sure What’s The Word is the original and 4 Pics 1 Word is no doubt trying to cash in on its success, but it does it very well. At the end of the day both games are free and both are fun so really give them both a try. And what ever games art style is easiest on your eyes will probably be the one you stick with.
